Luckily, in the past few years, trainers have become more and more of a staple accepted in even more formal gatherings (give it up for the trainer brides!). So we've broken down a few different styles that will surely fit your vibe.
Tennis shoes
Tennis shoes are timeless classic that never go out of style. They're also lightweight and versatile, which means they will pair with almost anything. Fabric and leather are the go-to materials–choose the one that's right for you. For frequent summer wear, consider opting for a lighter fabric and colour. If you want a pair that's a bit more robust, then leather is the way to go. We'd then recommend investing a bit more in a high-quality pair so that you can use them for longer than just a season.

Lacoste, a renowned brand synonymous with tennis attire, extends its iconic style to its tennis shoes. Sporting a timeless classic style, these shoes are a long-lasting wardrobe staple. And for a more distinctive flair, we recommend Veja–a French brand that prioritises local production and sustainable materials.
Superstars
If tennis shoes aren't your style, perhaps another alternative can be the timeless Adidas Superstar. The iconic Superstar series has been around for over 5 decades. First introduced and loved as basketball shoes, the Superstars nowadays are a staple in street style and go-to classic trainers. Definitely the world's freshest 50-year-old, if you ask us (along with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Adidas perfected this model over the years by combining modern tech with classic style.
Comfy shoes
Retro shoes have a cool vibe, but they're usually flat and hard on the soles–not big on comfort. But that's changing. In the past few years, the top 2 shoe brands Adidas and Nike have been trying to outdo each other in making the most comfy shoe ever. The result? Innovations like Adidas Boost and Nike React. Both use similar foam materials that are really comfortable and give a bounce to your step. They're often compared to walking on clouds–and yes, this might be as close as we get to it.
Dad shoes
One trend we're really into that's brought chunky trainers back into style is dad shoes. These shoes aren't just fashionable but are super comfortable too, with thick cushioned soles and bulky designs that are built to last. And, as an added bonus, who'd turn down a chance to channel the look of a 90's cool dad? We know we wouldn't.
Many brands have their take on the dad shoes these days. Some of our favourites are any Fila or New Balance shoes that are a sure-fire way to nail this trend. Nike and Adidas also have some fine picks. And if you're in a bit of a splurge mood, Balenciaga's iconic dad shoes should top your list.
Air Max
Nike's Air Max 270 and 720 models are excellent examples of athletic shoes that blend modern technology with distinctive design. In contrast to the previous Air Max models, originally intended to be running trainers, these 2 models were specifically designed to be a killer pair of all-purpose trainers. It seems to have won people's hearts over, as the Air Max 270s are one of Nike's best selling shoes since 2018.
Revamped classics
The brilliant collaboration between Comme des Garçons and Converse which began in 2009 definitely deserves the "modern classic" tag. Japanese brand Comme des Garçons upgrades the timeless Converse trainers with its iconic heart logo, making each CDG PLAY x Converse collection a hit overnight.
